About APA
The Asia-Pacific Alliance: Advancing the ICPD Agenda (APA/ICPD) is a network of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), overseas development agencies (ODAs), and philanthropic foundations from donor countries in the Pacific Rim (Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Thailand, and the United States). It promotes effective implementation of the Programme of Action adopted by the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in 1994 at Cairo and supplemented by Key Actions adopted by the 21st Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly on ICPD + 5 in 1999.
APA/ICPD works in a cooperative and strategic manner, engaging and utilizing the skills and the commitment of NGOs, ODA agencies, and philanthropic foundations towards achievement of ICPD goals and objectives in the Asia-Pacific Region.
The Asia-Pacific Rim is home to more than half of the world's population, including countries with the largest and smallest numbers of people. There is wide variation among and within countries in progress towards the achievement of the ICPD goals and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Major national and regional concerns are security, the spread of HIV/AIDS, population growth and structure, migration, and maternal and child mortality.
APA goal and objectives
In pursuit of the goal of "increased support for the population, sexual and reproductive health, environment, and development objectives agreed in the Programme of Action of the ICPD and most recently articulated by the MDGs", APA's focus is the achievement of the following:
- Enhanced cooperation and understanding among development, environment, and population/reproductive health NGOs and relevant government agencies and foundations
- Strengthened policy dialogue on population, reproductive health, environment, and development at national, regional, and international levels
- Increased political, financial, and technical support for population, reproductive health, environment, and development objectives
- Effective provision of resources by the international donor community to address ICPD objectives
- Capacity building of advocacy NGOs to promote ICPD POA in the region as well as globally
