Advancing the iCPD Agenda
At the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo in 1994, 179 countries
agreed to a comprehensive Programme of Action on sexual and reproductive health, sustainable
development, the environment, HIV and AIDS, gender equality and migration. ICPD was a paradigm shift
towards promoting rights-based and people-centred perspectives on these issues.
APA was created to ensure the fulfilment of this agenda, as it was clear that much work needed to be
done in Asia and the Pacific. APA advocates for ICPD principles and reminds governments of their ICPD
commitments.
