India as an Emerging Donor

India has been the largest recipient of foreign aid since the end of World War II. In 1992, total aid received was estimated at USD 55 billion since 1951.

But India has also long had a foreign aid program of its own and until recently, India's program has received very little attention.

As India's power and economy grows, so too does its potential as a donor. You can download a commentary, published by India's Economic and Political Weekly, on some of the implications for philanthropy and aid in South Asia from this website: http://www.planetd.org/2009/03/25/india-emerging-donor-premature-ambitions/.
