APA warmly welcomes new member Marie Stopes International (MSI) Australia and new supporting member the Youth Coalition (YC) to the alliance. APA looks forward to working with MSI Australia and the YC in fostering an enhanced environment that supports sexual and reproductive health programs and policies throughout Asia and the Pacific.
The National Council of Youth Organizations in Korea (NCYOK/ APA member) is organizing the 21st Youth International Conference. With the theme ‘The role of youth for achieving the Cairo Agenda’, the conference will be held on 18 to 25 August 2010 in South Korea. Hosted by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, Republic of Korea, it will gather 150 international and local participants aged 18 to 30. This event is co sponsored through the APA’s advocacy grants program.
The 18th international AIDS conference in Vienna, Austria is concluding 23 July 2010. One of the highlights of the conference was when delegates and speakers made a united call for global leaders to commit at least $US20 billion to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The Monday session featured powerful speakers such as former U.S. President Bill Clinton who provided the keynote address while Bill Gates addressed a special session on HIV Prevention. The meeting is widely viewed as the critical next step towards universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. Some of the world's largest institutions that are critical to serving the needs of women and children pledged their commitment to work jointly with the UN Secretary General and others in a new global effort to save the lives of more than 10 million women and children. UNAIDS, UNFPA, UNICEF, WHO, the World Bank, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, and the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health are coming together with leaders in the NGO community including Family Care International, World Vision International, International Council of AIDS Service Organizations, Care, Save the Children, the International Planned Parenthood Federation and countless others in response to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's Joint Action Plan for Women and Children's Health. In an international effort to reduce maternal deaths, Global Voices for Maternal Health launched a major project from the University of Oxford. The project will give over 10,000 midwives, nurses and doctors around the world a direct voice about their perspectives, the problems they face, and identify solutions to barriers in the delivery of lifesaving maternal health care. What Works for Women and Girls: Evidence for HIV/AIDS Interventions is a comprehensive review of successful HIV programming for women and girls. Published by OSI's Public Health Program, the resource contains the evidence of successful gender-specific programming from global programs and studies, with a focus on the Global South spanning reports with data from more than 90 countries. This new set of seven Population Reference Bureau (PRB) policy briefs aims to provide policymakers, program managers, advocates, and the media with basic information about achieving contraceptive security.
