The New Zealand AIDS Foundation (NZAF) is standing up for a Whangarei five year old who has been expelled from a childcare centre for having HIV. The National Referral Hospital in Honiara, Solomon Islands, has been awarded for establishing policies and practices encouraging maternal and child health. The hospital was declared “Mother and Baby Friendly” by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services in Solomon Islands and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and is the first hospital in the Pacific to meet expanded standards for both mother and baby friendliness. The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is requesting submissions for its report to the Secretary General on ‘Reprisals against persons cooperating with UN human rights mechanisms’, including SRHR activists and advocates. Examples of cooperation include shadow reports, communication with Special Procedures, participation in the Universal Periodic Review, speaking at a UN panel or side event, submitting a complaint through an optional protocol or any other UN human rights mechanism. Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Popultaion and Development, in cooperation with UNAIDS, organized the ‘Indochina Parliamentarians’ Focus Group on an HIV/AIDS Related Legal Environment’ on 21-22 April. 30 parliamentarians from Indochina, and Asia and the Pacific, discussed national level HIV/AIDS legislation, and were facilitated by representatives from civil society organizations, key affected populations and the UN. The parliamentarians produced action plans including short and long-term individual and collective actions to address legal barriers and improve the legal framework for more effective national HIV/AIDS responses.
The Australian people and their government should remain focused on defeating HIV, according to an opinion piece written by Burnet Institute Director and CEO Professor Brendan Crabb, and member of the UNDP Global Commission on HIV and the Law the Hon. Michael Kirby AC, CMG.
