In a groundbreaking new ranking, Foreign Policy teamed up with the Center for Global Development to create the first annual CGD/FP Commitment to Development Index, which grades 21 rich nations on whether their aid, trade, migration, investment, peacekeeping, and environmental policies help or hurt poor nations. Family Care International has produced briefing cards on the Millennium Development Goals and sexual and reproductive health to raise awareness among governments, NGOs and others of the importance of sexual and reproductive health for development and the contribution of sexual and reproductive health toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The cards are designed to provide clear, concise information on the links between sexual and reproductive health and the first seven MDGs. Each card also includes the commitments made by governments at prior international conferences, statistics, quotes, and key actions.

Published by the Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGI) and UNFPA, this report makes the case for increased funding for sexual and reproductive health services — particularly in resource-poor countries — by illustrating unusually broad societal and individual impact of investments in sexual and reproductive health.
The UN Millennium Project found that sexual and reproductive health is crucial for the achievement of the MDGs. Access to family planning services; safe motherhood; prevention efforts as well as treatment of sexual transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS; and the elimination of gender violence would improve the lives of the poor and spur economic and social development.
Media statements and several comprehensive background documents are available online.

User fees for health care are a life or death issue for millions of people in poor countries. Too poor to pay, women and children are paying with their lives. For those who do pay, over 100 million are pushed into poverty each year. This month will witness a global opportunity for world leaders to really make a difference to poor people by backing the expansion of free health care in a number of countries. The opportunity marks a true test of leaders' commitment to save lives and accelerate progress towards health care for all in our lifetime. The question is, will they pass it?
