China's population has taken on healthy growth pattern since 1991, instead of the previous fast expansion. The nation has the largest population in the world. Its population reached 1.328 billion by the end of 2008, accounting for 20 percent of the total population in the world.

The Maternal Health Task Force at EngenderHealth and Ashoka will partner to create the first international fellowship program that links committed young professionals with seasoned social entrepreneurs to improve maternal health in developing countries. The Maternal Health Task Force and Ashoka will be featuring the Young Champions for Maternal Health Program as a commitment to action at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in New York City, September 22-25.

Thanad was one of more than 16,000 Thais from the provinces of Chonburi and Rayong who volunteered to take part in the trial, which was run jointly by the Thai government and US military.

Thailand: HIV vaccine 'reduces infection'

An experimental HIV vaccine has for the first time cut the risk of infection, researchers say. The vaccine - a combination of two earlier experimental vaccines - was given to 16,000 people in Thailand, in the largest ever such vaccine trial. Researchers found that it reduced by nearly a third the risk of contracting HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS.

On a visit to East Timor I watched a young mother give birth after she had walked hours to medical care. Just a few hours later, she had no alternative but to take her baby and set out on the long walk home.

Across countries in Asia and the Pacific, the unmet need for sexual and reproductive health services remains vast. Donors and governments need to improve health systems and respect sexual rights.
