APFSD 2024 - Statement by APRCEM Thematic Working Group on Gender Sexuality, and SRHR

2024

Statement by the APRCEM Women's Constituency and the Gender, Sexuality and SRHR Thematic Working Group on Agenda Item 2: Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions in Asia and the Pacific

Dear delegates,

I am Sai from ARROW, representing the Women's Constituency and the Gener, Sexuality and SRHR Thematic Working Group of APRCEM.

The Summit of the Future discussions are underway , and the pact does mention women and girls, the crucial question we need to ask now is what are the processes in place that focus on HOW and BY WHOM are the women and girls in all their diversities overarching concerns addressed.

The ICPD Programme of Action, adopted in 1994, 30 Years ago, by 179 Member States, lays out a far-sighted plan for advancing human well-being, placing people at the core of sustainable development, human rights and gender equality of individuals at the centre of the global sustainable development agenda.

The ICPD Programme to Action needs to be reaffirmed and its implementation accelerated in Pact of the Future, to support human rights and just development and to address the climate crisis, peace and security, and truly eliminate all forms of gender based violence.

We call for increased financing and support for women and feminist intersectional organisations, and youth organisations - not just to engage in the processes leading up to the Summit of the Future, but pave the way forwards for meaningful engagement in multilateral fora.

Listening to OUR perspectives and OUR voices is crucial in order to be truly accountable and responsive to the needs of people on the ground, in all their diversity. Strengthening accountability through the institutionalization of civil society is a linchpin for achieving meaningful engagement through increased resources, participation and voice.

We also want to reiterate the role of regional commissions of United Nations in order to decentralise and localise the Pact of the Future to regional realities. There is no future without peace , and we call for the Summit of the future to ensure peaceful, just and accountable institutions are actually effective in action in a continuous manner , and go beyond the language of the PACT and PEACE that thrives in ALL our countries.
