In 2015, United Nations member states agreed to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) that would be a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

Family Planning NSW acknowledges universal access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), including family planning services, is critical if we are to meet these goals by 2030.

Family Planning NSW’s SRHR and the SDGs: Priorities for Australia and the Pacific 2020 report has identified seven key priorities relating to SRHR that should guide implementation of the SDGs in Australia, and Australia’s work in these areas in the Pacific:.

The seven key priorities central to meet the SDGs are:

  • promote gender equality and ending violence against women
  • increase access to long acting reversible contraceptives
  • eliminate cervical cancer
  • invest in comprehensive sexuality education
  • promote access to sexual and reproductive health services for vulnerable groups
  • improve access to abortion care
  • improve sexual and reproductive health data

A focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights will improve the effectiveness of other SDG strategies, ensuring they are cheaper and quicker to achieve. SRHR therefore are foundational for achieving the ambitious 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the SDGs.
