APA joins civil society in welcoming the Political Declaration which passed the first day of the 52 nd Commission on Population and Development (CPD), 1-5 April 2019.
We welcome the reaffirmation of the the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action (PoA) and its linkages to Agenda 2030, and applaud the pledge of Member States to undertake further action to ensure its full and accelerated implementation.
The Chair of APA Steering Committee, Shama Karkal, CEO at Swasti Health Catalyst, delivered our joint statement on day three of the CPD, sharing our support for the Political Declaration and highlighting the outcomes of the midterm review (MTR) of the 2013 Asia Pacific Ministerial Declaration on Population and Development, which took place in November 2018, and youth participation.
The importance of the Asia Pacific midterm review outcomes was also underlined by of Mr Antonio Jose from Philippines, Chair of the MTR, with the need for a participatory accountability mechanism stressed.
2019 marks the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the ICPD PoA by 179 UN Member States in Cairo, Egypt in 1994.
